The Rodney March Philadelphia Big Brass Concert August 9

On Saturday, August 9 at 8pm, parishioners will have the opportunity to hear a special concert highlighting the second Annual Francis Johnson Tribute. This will be performed by The Rodney Mack Philadelphia Big Brass and will feature a special side-by-side performance by Bravo Brass.

Francis Johnson was a pioneer African-American composer and bandmaster whose prolific output exceeded 300 pieces. He was born in 1792 in Philadelphia.

Rodney Mack, a renowned trumpeter and Curtis graduate, is the founder of The Philadelphia Big Brass. They are a collection of Philadelphia’s top brass and percussion players.

Both Johnson and Mack are internationally recognized African-American musicians and bandleaders. Johnson played the then newly invented keyed bugle, a predecessor to the trumpet, the instrument which Mack has become a master soloist.

Bravo Brass, the brass ensemble of the Philadelphia, Youth Orchestra program often performs at Holy Trinity
