Lenten Study
Topic: Who Was Jesus And Why Does It Matter?
For 2,000 years Jesus has been the central figure of Christianity and shaped the imagination of Western
culture. But ever since the Enlightenment scholars have questioned whether the Jesus of history and the
Christ of faith are really the same person. Can we trust the biblical portraits of Jesus? What about the
Gnostic Gospels? Has the Church’s “Christology” overshadowed the actual person of Jesus himself?
Various “Quests for the Historical Jesus” have been undertaken to get at these very issues. Our Lenten
study will focus on the question of the historical identity of Jesus and how further insight into it might
make us more faithful followers of our Master the Christ.
