Palm Sunday The liturgy on this day moves from the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem to a somber end with the death of Jesus on the cross. In place of the gospel, we participate in reading together the Passion narrative. In between services, we join with local Christian congregations in Rittenhouse Square for the Blessing and Procession of the Palms.

Tenebrae Tenebrae is Latin for ‘darkness’ or ‘shadows.’ This service is a meditative service of readings, psalms, and chants. Candles and other lights in the church are gradually extinguished until only a single candle, symbolizing Christ, remains. This candle is then hidden, representing the apparent victory of the forces of evil. At the very end of the service, a loud noise is made, symbolizing the earthquake at the time of the resurrection. The hidden candle is restored to its place, and by its light all depart in silence.

Maundy Thursday In this Choral Eucharist, we recall the night before Jesus’ crucifixion and death. First, we remember Jesus in washing his disciples’ feet; in our worship we will demonstrate this act of humility and service in a more contemporary fashion. Second, we remember the institution of Holy Communion at the Last Supper. Finally, the sanctuary is stripped of all decoration, making us mindful of the somber time we are about to enter.

Good Friday – The Three Hours This service consists of a series of meditations spanning the three hours during which Jesus was on the cross. Each part of the service will have a hymn, an address, prayers and silence. Please come for any part, or for all, of the service.

Good Friday Liturgy This solemn service focuses on the Crucifixion of Jesus. We participate in reading the Passion according to John, then, like Jesus on the cross, we pray to God for the needs of the world. Finally, we receive Holy Communion from the Sacrament reserved from Maundy Thursday.

Holy Saturday Liturgy This brief liturgy from our Prayer Book enables us to reflect on the sense of dark waiting on that first Holy Saturday.

Easter Vigil This is the first service of Easter and is celebrated sometime between sunset on Holy Saturday and sunrise on Easter Sunday. It consists of four parts: The Service of Light (the kindling of new fire, lighting the Paschal Candle, the Exsultet); The Service of Lessons (recalling the history of salvation); Christian Initiation (Holy Baptism) or the Renewal of Baptismal Vows; and the first Eucharist of Easter.

Easter Day On this day the Church celebrates in liturgy, color, and music the Resurrection of our Lord.
