To be a Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing.

Prayer is the breath of God in and through the Church. It is the Holy Spirit “breathing,” nurturing, and praying for us as we pray for ourselves and the world. Prayer is also one of the hardest aspects of the Christian life to talk about, even though it is so central to the life of faith! For many of us it seems that our prayer life is more like the conversation of an awkward first date (and a blind one at that!) rather than the intimate knowing conversation between soul mates.

Jesus set a clear example of prayer throughout his earthly ministry. The Scripture constantly re-affirms that Jesus prayed both alone and for and with others. Prayer in his life, as in ours, is the most direct and immediate communion with God. Jesus taught us the prayer we use most often: the Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13). And of course, as Episcopalians, who would we be without our Book of Common Prayer?

Scripture (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18) Be joyful always, pray at all times, be thankful in all circumstances. This is what God wants from you in your life in union with Christ Jesus.
